There is a passenger lift at Leighton House which provides access to all floors of the museum, with platform lifts located on the ground floor and basement to provide additional step free access. Each of these lifts will accommodate standard wheelchairs and mobility aids. Buggies and push chairs can be used on all floors of the new wing and in the Learning Centre on the lower ground floor. Unfortunately, buggies and pushchairs can’t be taken into the historic house. Limited metered parking is available in nearby streets from Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6.30pm, Saturday 8.30am to 1.30pm. There is additional parking in the Holland Park Car Park off Abbotsbury Road (pay and display), which is 10 minutes’ walk from either museum.

The library was added to the house at the same time as the Arab Hall. That coincided with Leighton’s time as president of the Royal Academy. The room showcases his priceless collection of Islamic tiles.

The upper floor of the new wing is still used as one of the museum’s exhibition spaces. The main room was first floor studio, facing north, originally 14 meters by 8 meters, with a large central window to provide plenty of light for the painting. There stood several paintings in different stages of completion, the walls hung with examples of Leighton's work. Many of the most important figures of the Victorian era passed through this room, including Queen Victoria herself, who visited Leighton in 1859. There was also a gallery at the east end and a separate staircase for the models to use.
Please remember to double check opening hours with the venue concerned before making a special visit. Two gender-neutral toilets are found on the lower basement level without step-free access. Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of this museum, there are currently no accessible toilets or baby change facilities. Pets are not allowed inside Leighton House and Sambourne House, including outdoor spaces and the De Morgan Café at Leighton House.
When was this home built and last sold?
Just before his death in 1896, Leighton was ennobled, becoming Baron Leighton of Stretton. He is the only British artist to have been awarded this honour and is buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral. There are no lifts located at Sambourne House and unfortunately the house not wheelchair accessible. Weather permitting, the garden will be open for visitors to enjoy.
Also on display in the Learning Centre are other original artworks gifted to the museum by artists who have led workshops with Leighton House, as well as a rotating gallery of student artworks. Created during the transformative project, Hidden Gem to National Treasure, the Tavolozza Drawings Gallery at Leighton House provides a brand new exhibition space specifically designed for the display of drawings. Within three years of the house being completed, Leighton undertook the first of what would be a series of extensions and alterations. To increase the size of the studio on the first floor, the east wall was taken down and the house extended by some 5 metres. The extension incorporated a new canvas store accessed via a trapdoor in the floor of the studio and changed the way the models entered the studio via the service staircase.
This beautiful mansion has become a museum and has many works of art. You can buy an adult ticket for £11 but I would also suggest doubling up your visit (£20) and also going for a look round Sambourne House, Leighton House’s sister site, just around the corner. Sambourne House is the Victorian townhouse of Punch illustrator Edward Linley Sambourne.

Here is the most unusual feature of the house, the Arab Hall (Arab Hall), which was created from an extension on the house made between 1877 and 1879. It is decorated with a golden dome, mosaics and intricate walls and lined with beautiful Islamic tiles. This two-story space was built to house Leighton's tile collection collected during visits to the Middle East.
In the late 19th century lots of artists enjoyed great wealth and fame due to a burgeoning middle class, looking to spend their disposable income on artworks. At the end of the 1880s, he added a winter studio, complete with a heating system. Below is a reflection pool set in the middle of a Pompeiian mosaicked floor. Legend holds that artists James Whisper and Edward Burne-Jones once fell into the fountain during an animated conversation. Suitcases and large bags are not permitted at either of our museums. This also helps to preserve the delicate fabric of the historic interiors.
It’s a turquoise mural painted onsite over a 9 week period. Props and painting materials were stored here too, allowed the main studio to be more orderly. Leighton’s time was organized around the submission of his paintings for inclusion in the annual exhibition of the Royal Academy each spring. This was where almost all the paintings from Leighton’s mature career were produced. Indeed, it was the only bedroom in the house except for servants quarters.
