Entry to Leighton House is via the ground floor reception and is now step-free. There are cycle racks for a limited number of bicycles outside the Leighton House visitor entrance. There are additional cycle racks along Kensington High St within easy reach of either museum.

Leighton often travelled and on trips to Turkey in 1867, to Egypt in the following year and to Syria in 1873, he collected textiles, pottery and other objects that were later to be displayed in his house. However, the trip to Damascus in 1873 laid the foundations for the wonderful collection of tiles that line the walls of the Arab Hall extension. Further examples were collected for Leighton by others, including the explorer and diplomat, Sir Richard Burton. The main inspiration was an interior contained in a 12th-century Sicilio-Norman palace called La Zisa at Palermo in Sicily.

Throughout the 20th century the identity of the museum changed from being Frederic Leighton’s former studio-home to being a venue for a more general borough museum and events space. In the process, many of the interior fittings and finishes were lost. This coincided with a period when interest in Victorian culture was at a low point. Leighton House is a discreet house with a red brick facade that doesn't even attract much attention from those who walk down the street. From the outside, it doesn't even seem that the building holds so many charms and beautiful works.

By the end of the 1800s nine artists had commissioned purpose-built studio-houses here, one of whom was one Frederic Leighton. Frederic Leighton was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire in 1830 to a wealthy medical family, the second of three children. At an early age he showed an interest in drawing, and went on to study art on the continent, despite his parents’ early reservations about his choice of career. Leighton did undeniably succeed – Queen Victoria bought his first major painting in 1855, and in 1878 he reached the pinnacle of his profession, with his election as President of the Royal Academy of Arts. He also received numerous international honours and was highly regarded by his peers.
By moving visitor facilities out of the historic house, the museum was also able to re-present Leighton’s historic Entrance Hall and Winter Studio, returning them to how they appeared during Leighton’s lifetime. The problem of winter smogs and fogs was a concern for many artists whose year was focussed on the submission of their work to the Royal Academy at the end of March or early April. Leighton’s solution was to commission a large winter studio to be added at the east end of his main studio.
There is no minimum amount however we ask for a maximum of 30 people per tour. A screen with a gallery partitions off the far end of the room. Among other things, you’ll see maquettes and photographs of Michelangelo sculptures from the Medici Chapels in Florence. There are red walls and oriental carpets on the walls and floor. Cabinets are filled with books and decorated with sculptures. This room is a small antechamber that Leighton referred to as his “snug.” It served as a second, and more intimate, studio space.
Later, Leighton used the Silk Room to display works by contemporary artists who were also his friends. In his dining room, Leighton entertained many celebrated artists and society figures of his day. The walls are hung with prints and drawings from Leighton’s collection. There is 19th century Ottoman velvet with silver work on the walls and tables. In 1896, one day after becoming a lord, Leighton died of heart failure at 65. At 26, he debuted at the Royal Academy with the painting Cimabue’s Celebrated Madonna, an imaginary procession of Renaissance artists.
And the hall captures the essence of Narcissus, the youthful character who fell in love with his own reflection in a shimmering pool. The sculpture is reflected in the room’s deep blue tiles and opulent gilded ceiling. And you’ll see a copy of Michelangelo’s Creation of God fresco from the Sistine Chapel. Back in London, Leighton also amassed a collection of art by his contemporaries like Dante Gabriel Rossetti, George Frederic Watts, and Albert Moore. Leighton’s passion was travel, especially to the Middle East.
All suitcases and any bag larger than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm are not permitted at either of our museums. We recommend that large backpacks are not taken into the historical areas of either Leighton House or Sambourne House. Both Leighton House and Sambourne House do not have any onsite parking and we recommend travelling by public transport where possible. There are no drop-off parking spaces at Leighton House and Sambourne House.
